Withdraw a sent document
Withdraw (cancel) a document that has been sent out for signing. The document is returned to DRAFT status and signers are notified.
Status Requirements:
- Document must be in
PENDINGstatus; any other status returns409 INVALID_STATE. UseDELETE /api/v1/documents/{id}for documents inDRAFT, andPOST /api/v1/approval-requests/{id}/cancelforPENDING_APPROVAL.
Permissions:
- Requires the
WITHDRAW_DOCUMENTworkspace permission.
Request Body:
reason(optional) - Free-text reason. Included in withdrawal emails to signers and stored on the audit log.
What happens when you withdraw:
- Document status is set back to
DRAFT - Any existing signatures and signer verifications are removed
- Each signer’s signing/sending/read status is reset
- Pending signing reminders are cancelled
- A withdrawal email is sent to every signer that had been notified
- The
document.withdrawnwebhook is triggered
Response: Returns the document in the same shape as GET /api/v1/documents/{id}, without fields.
Authorizations
Personal API key, e.g. Authorization: Bearer sajn_sk_.... Not scope-limited — acts as the issuing user.
Headers
API version for this request. Without it, the request uses the organization's default version; an organization without a default is pinned to the latest version by its first request.
2026-09, 2026-10 ID of the workspace this request acts in, from GET /api/v1/workspaces. Without it, an API key acts in its default workspace. The token's user must be a member of the workspace; an OAuth token only accepts the workspace it was granted for. A workspace that doesn't exist or can't be reached returns 403 WORKSPACE_ACCESS_DENIED.
Makes retries safe. A retry with the same key and the same request replays the stored response for 24 hours (header Idempotent-Replayed: true); the same key with a different request returns 400.
